Australia 4 - Juniors

Here's a couple of pictures taken by a friend of mine on the weekend. There was a full Junior program at Mildura Speedway on Saturday night followed by a training session conducted by senior riders Leigh Adams and Mark Lemon on Sunday morning.
The rider pictured is Sam Martin from South Australia.

On Sunday I paid my first visit to Somersby located near Gosford on the N.S.W. Central Coast for the running of the inaugural Roy Thomsen Memorial.  Roy was a tireless worker behind the scenes for several years in this part of the world, and was one who always had an encouraging word of advice for riders in the early stages of the careers.
There's also a report from another Junior speedway event held in New South Wales this weekend.
In attendance were Grand Prix Stars Todd Wiltshire and Ryan Sullivan, who I had the pleasure of interviewing during the latter stages of the meeting.
Ryan and Todd also presented trophies to the competitors at the end of the meeting, and their very presence on these occasions certainly gives the sport at this level a boost.
The meeting was won in impressive style by Chris Holder who earlier this season won the N.S.W. and Queensland titles.
Chris reeled off five impressive victories before another rocket start saw him win the A Final, from his closest challenger Tom Armstrong, with Luke Slade in 3rd place and Rowan Tungate in 4th.
Holder certainly looks one for the future and he looked right at home on the 105 meter Somersby track. He was challenged briefly by Armstrong in one of the early heats, but when it came to the crunch his starting technique held him in good stead.
Based on this meeting the future of the sport looks bright in N.S.W. and the Central Coast Junior Motor Cycle club are to be congratulated on a fine meeting. All competitors received a trophy at the end of the meeting, and Mick Poole and his band of helpers are to be congratulated for a well run show.
All in all a pretty good afternoons racing on a small tight track that the boys handled pretty well.
Thanks the Club for the invitation to do commentary, I did enjoy the day.

I want to thank Lee Morris for these photos... Cheers, RC Jones - December, 2002
